Mortal Kombat gets a reboot?

February 11th, 2008 1 comment

Christopher Wingfield Morrison, a. k. a. mink, will obviously do Mortal Kombat 3. What has this guy done before? According to IMDB he has directed Into the Sun, starring Steven Seagal, and Full Clip, starring Busta Rhymes. Whatta whopping list of A-class movies. Anyway, there’s a Moviehole report stating that the project is a “re-envisioning(if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom”. Apparently, the Producers are in the process of working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing. After that is squared away “all casting options will be explored”.

Drew McWeeny said on AICN that he hasn’t heard from the producers for years now even though IMDB still mentions him as a writer. I wonder if there will be a connection with the next installment of the video game which should be announced this year. This version will be set after the events in MK: Armageddon and will feature a completely new characters, storylines and fatalities. So, both the movie and the game will start with a clean slate. At least according to the information that’s available right now. Hm. I wonder if Christopher Lambert will return as Lord Rayden …

In the Name of the King

Against better knowledge I watched that movie last week. It seems like I was right when I said earlier that I don’t trust people saying Boll actually did something right. I have to admit though that the movie was better than I expected. It has a cheap look and feel and it was quite reminiscent of the Eragon movie which too sucked big time. But then, I didn’t expect anything else. It’s just the same as with all Boll movies. The music often was plain distracting and I wished for a remote with a working mute button.

In the Name of the King is loosely based on Dungeon Siege; unfortunately, the film had little to do with the game. The special effects were pretty cheesy although I liked the way wizards can travel if need be. The depicted land seemed bleak and quite depressing. The enemy – the krugs – looked very bad; I could easily discern the costumes. As far as the acting is concerned, I won’t go into details. It was horrible. To be honest, I felt like I was watching a workprint. That’s a shame. Still, more editing efforts might have turned Boll’s latest flick into something watchable. If only …
