How to Connect the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) via USB
So, this week I bought the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) so that I too could revel in the Android glory. I did a litte research before buying the phone and in the end I had to make my choice between the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000). I went for the Galaxy S because of the Super AMOLED, the 8 GB storage, and the bigger screen. Up until an hour ago I liked what I had.
When I tried to connect the phone to the PC to access the SD card though, it didn’t really work. I tried changing a few settings and I even installed Samsung Kies which didn’t help either. Alright, a challenge then. I set my mind to the task and here’s how I finally managed to access the phone’s internal SD card on my PC running Windows XP. On Windows 7 everything just works so there’s no need to install or change anything at all.
- Install Samsungs New PC Studio for the drivers (Alternatively, you can try to locate only the drivers somewhere else on the web).
- Go to Settings – About phone – USB settings and choose Ask on connection.
- Go to Settings – Applications – Development and turn on USB debugging.
- Connect the phone via USB, choose Mass storage from the menu, slide the notification drawer down and select “Select to copy files to/from your computer”.
- Confirm the popup by pressing “Mount”.
Now comes the important part because this didn’t work the first time.
- Disconnect the phone in the notification drawer und disconnect the USB cable.
- Go to Settings – Applications – Development and turn off USB debugging.
- Connect the phone again as outlined above and now everything should work normally.
That’s how I got my Galaxy S working. Everything else I tried did nothing at all – and I literally searched through lots of forums. As long as there’s a solution I don’t mind. Sure, it sucks big time but at least I didn’t have to contact support and wait days or weeks for a solution.

Man I had to go through the same hell on Windows 7.
i had the phone for 7 days now, and I am still unable to connect it via bluetooth. i need to do this to be able to sync contacts, calander and tasks. which using the cable i have to do manually.
other than this annoying bit, the Galaxy s is a great phone

Unfortunately, Kies ist one of the worst pieces of software I’ve ever seen and even if it works at all it doesn’t always work as it should be.
I am running XP sp3, and have had previous struggles here to get Kies to work. I thought that those bad old days were behind me. I have never known of such struggles to be experienced in a community over such a basic piece of software as Kies. Sadly, I just yesterday went through installing the latest upgrade of Kies and now I have gone back to the bad old days when Kies did not work. I am unable to back up my contacts, calendar etc. The move to upgrade was brought about by me being notified by Samsung that I should upgrade the phone’s kernel software, but first back-up your critical files. When I went to back these up, I was told that I should upgrade to the latest version of Kies first. Obediently doing so, things that worked before now do not. At this stage, on no account would I risk upgrading the kernel.
The moral of the story as far as Samsung software is concerned “if the bits of software you need to work, works, don’t change anything”.
Samsung should be publishing a list of known issues and problems with Kies and the Galaxy kernel so that at least we would be in a clearer picture as to whether or not to install an upgrade.
I also have the same problem. I tried in so many ways read the manuals and the comments from other users, their ideas but could not connect it. When I connect to the PC, my PC is Window 7, 32 bit, the kies always tells that the drivers installation is not successful. I went to the mass storage too,But it does not appears the data of the SD card. Is anybody thereto solve my problem, I would thank the gays.
Samsung, what a third class kies software you produced and gave tension to your costumers. Why your kies does not work in the computers. I loosed my two days in kies and upgrading but nothing has been changed.
Ok Folks – Here is an update from my last post. I since made sure that all the necessary Windows updates for XP Sp3 have been loaded and working and that my system is cleaned up – defrag etc. -Quite a job. Then suddenly Kies is working better than ever. So there is another moral – if you’re game to work with Kies you must keep your system – whatever it is – up to date and clean as well.
Good luck.
Hi Folks – Here is an update on “Kies in my life”. From the above post (Jan 5) you will see that I finally got Kies working. I decided to take advantage of the situation and so backed up as much of my data on the Galaxy as Kies would allow and then UPGRADED the Galaxy to FROYO. I am pleased to report that the upgrade went without a hitch and with no loss of data. The upgrade via Kies went like clockwork. Just a note to say that when the upgrade was complete Kies rebooted the phone – this took some time to complete (say at least ten minutes) so be patient don’t touch the phone during this completion stage – for me it was the longest ten minutes I have experienced for some time.
It ia cirtainly worth the upgrade to FROYO. The Galaxy seems to be more reliable in a Kies environment and there seems to be added functionality in Kies with phones running FROYO.
Good luck.
I just installed Kies which I think gave me the drivers I needed but unsure exactly on that.
Basically connect the phone to the laptop with USB cable (ensure you have changed the settings so you have to choose what happens when you attach the phone to the laptop each time – eg “ask on connection” in settings – USB settings). Connect to the laptop and don’t click on Kies or Mass Storage when it asks you, just cancel out. Then go to settings – wireless & network – tethering. Then click on USB tethering. My laptop is now connected over my phone as I type….
Hi
I read your instructions above and i still couldnt get through. My phones MTP Application still crashes as i connect my USB cable and to my mobile and the computer. Please help me out with a better solution, if you can asap. Thanks
Thx for the guide. Worked perfectly for me.
oh wow you genius thank you!!! What a pallava!!
mine does nothing AT ALL when i plug the USB in… it just charges, thats it, full stop. what a joke for such an expensive phone. FML
Natalie, there’s a lot going on here any of which could cause your problem. Can you tell us a bit about what your enivironment is – operating system etc.
I have the same, just how Natalie described – when I plug the USB in my mobile just charges… but my computer does not react…
Could you help me?
I’ve really no idea what to do
I have Windows 7 64-bit.
Do you have any commuication between either the computer and the phone (computer will recognise the phone and ask you for an action, or you will see the phone as an icon as part of your comuter resources), or communication between the phone and the computer (phone will say on its screen that it is in comunication mode (via Kies or data etc)?
No, my computer doesn’t recognise the phone – that’s the problem. When I plug in, my phone starts to charge battery but my computer doesn’t react – as if I didn’t connect the phone (or any other device). And it’s not visible as part of computer resources (my computer doesn’t ask for action so I have to enter ‘My computer’ everytime I connect a device).
BUT something strange happened ONLY twice while connecting the phone via USB (I tried many times) – there was a message on the screen that there was some problem with the phone (error) and installing drives failed…
It sounds like there is a problem with the drivers. Are you running the latest version of Kies? If not downlowd from the Samsung site and install onto your computer (it should include the latest drivers) and then try connecting. It would be unlikely that there is a problem with the software on your phone – but….if the latest version of Kies does not work, then perhaps call Samsung support and bring them into the loop.
Yes, I have the latest version of Kies…
I think I just have to visit Samsung service – maybe they’ll find what’s going on.
Thanks for trying to help me
guys, I don’t have the ‘USB Settings’ on my galaxy S. I go to settings -> about phone and I have the following options:
status
battery use
legal information
system tutorial
model number
firmware version (2.2)
baseband version
kernel version
build number
thanks allot for informayion.it works with first time on Win7 WITH HALF OF THE STEPS U RECOMMENDS n very fast to change files……………..GREAT”

Everything works now. Finally
edu giansante – i have this problem too. did you find a way to locate ‘USB Settings’?
Absolute ledgend, finally got kies and sgs to work together after days of messing round with devices!! much appreciated!!
plz help me , when it’s conected my on my pc pop-up window isn’t appearing
actually, its very easy to fix, maybe for newer version of samsung galaxy, the USB setting is changed

http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/mobile/html/26_03.html
The above link mention location is incorrect.
It should be Settings → Wireless and network → USB settings → Mass storage / Ask on connection.
I also spend a day to figure out this stupid issue
edu giansante & tim- i had the same problem. i solved it by checking ‘Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging’ and then reconnected to PC with Kies running.
I just went to settings/USB settings and enable Mass storage. Didn’t install any drivers.
Android 2.2
edu giansante and Tim, if you are using Froyo 2.2 on your galaxy, then the usb settings can be found under Settings ->Wireless and Network and not under the phone settings as you have in Eclair or earlier versions of Android.
Unfortunately, I have the same problem as Natalie and Jon. I am currently connecting my galaxy to computer just for charging purposes and my 16Gb internal memory and 16gb external memory disks are not functioning. Things have grayed out for my external memory card and the total and available spaces are always showing as unavailable. Because of this I am not able to download many apps and camera is complaining to turn off the usb storage to use it. Although, I managed to do it few times and made internal card memory and camera to work, restarting my mobile will taking back to the issue again. There is no change in external memory though. And ofcourse I am not able to succesfully connect Kies new version since my first succesful connection.
I am using the singpore version (DXJPE) of galaxy in New Zealand though.
Any help would be appreciated.
Kies has cost me four days of my life trying everything to get it to work with Galaxy S and still no joy.
What a piece of crap to associate with what is supposed to be high end technology!
So disappointed with this Samsung purchase.
I am giving up. Stupid Samsung Galaxy S is useless. It charges via USB on Windows 7, but it is an unknown device before or after Kies. Why didn’t Samsung at least test it? Windows cannot find drivers for it. This is an unsupported piece of hardware and ATT or Samsung will not solve it. This is the last time I buy a Samsung phone. The salesman recommended it as the best, but all it is good for is making calls. None of the directions given, including for the Froyo upgrade, are any good. How can I upgrade if Windows doesn’t even recognize it?
Galaxy-Trash
My Son runs Kies under Windows 7 with his Samsung Galaxy S running the Froyo upgrade. He says that he has had no problem getting everything to work. I would look at your Windows 7 installation, including updates and also the possability of a faulty Mobile – a phonecall to Samsung can answeer that.
Good luck
You all should have bought a HTC then!! No problems connecting to the PC.
I have a Samsung Fascinate Galaxy S I500, the only thing this brilliant junk will do is work like a telephone and will let you text occasionally, will not connect to pc even when talking to online help, using samsung pc studio doesn’t help, i have win 7/64 pro
Hey for windows 7 users its almost the same procedure,
(without the usb cable connected)
1- Go to settings
2- About Phone
3- USB setting
4- Select Mass Storage
5- Connect usb cable
6- It will tell you its connected, go to the top of the screenn to drop down the menu of Ongoing and select usb connected, there is a button that says turn on USB storage, hit it and you good.
THANKS JC
Samsung GS I9000 is GREAT no problems no need of KIES, drivers or any upgrades. A hell of a lot of games and apps. If it wasn’t for no flash it would be the best phone i’ve had. B REAL no matter what you have you will always want something better but learn to live with something.
I am trying to download music onto my Galaxy but it will not connect to my pc, i have followed the instructions above and in the booklet but still nothing…. please help
Has anyone tried using the free desktop app from verizon? Its a big bloated piece of crap that took over an hour to import all my media, but at least I can get files back and forth. Without VMM, Windows 7 recognizes you plugged in the phone with a “usb connect sound”, but there is no way to access the internal card, it just charges the phone. This is most likely on purpose to ‘force’ you to use their VMM to temp you to hit the ‘Shop’ button……..
Went here and found the desktop app
http://www.verizonwireless.com/vmm
This is the direct link: (Scroll to the bottom once you get there to see the desktop app)

I have the Fascinate which is basically the Galaxy S with pre-packed apps and a slightly different look. So I expect it should work with the Galaxy S as well? All I can say is it worked for the Samsung Fascinate.
When I installed VMM, there was an option to install drivers for ”Samsung i770″ or ”Samsung Other”. Eventually it recognized my phone but only gave 4 options: “Galaxy Tab”, “Fascinate”, and unfortunately I can’t remember the other two, but they were names (no numbers). Checking the web for samsung phone i think one was “Captivate”.
Might be worth a shot…
Ok so it wasn’t that hard after all and nothing was done on purpose…. Just cynical… and I didn’t need VMM (except to show me how to connect my phone).
After connecting USB, the phone will have a notification. Open the notification and it should let you “Mount” the card. I need to do this every time I plug it in…
To Everyone on here with samsung issue (I currrently have i-9000):
I can only vouch for what has worked for me, I’ve tried everything from re-installing to trying to find the device driver online…. I’ve found that windows 7, doesn’t like the driver that comes with the Kies software, so follow these steps and let me know how it worked for you.
1. Leave the Samsung phone plugged in with the Kies program open, saying connecting (or at least what I had showing)
2. Go to start
3. Control Panel
4. Device Manager
5. Click the Arrow for “Portable Devices”
6. Right Click and Update Driver Software
7. Allow Windows 7 to find update via Internet
8. Let it does its thing installing new driver
9. Close Everything, Open Kies and device found
Again I can only explain that this is what worked for me.
Followed your instructions as I am having exactly the same issues you did. I also did just what you did but could still not connect the phone. After following your instructions I got stuck when disconnecting did not bring up the debugging – so what happens now? Have connected the phone again but no joy! Thanks for the hope though.
its a fantastic phone, but it seems too many people have the same issue, i will be ringing samsung tomorrow demanding it to be fixed, not a happy camper
Help, i just got the Galaxy S GT-19000T and can’t connect to my XP pc.
I desperately need to listen to some music. Help…
I just install Samsung New PC Studio, and it says to Select PC Sync after USB is plugged but i could not find such option. options are Samsung kies, Media… and Storage thing only. It detects my phone’s storage and medias… it already took me 2 days trying but still can’t figure out how… what a waste of time.
A FEW things clear with this phone: IT COST YOU NOT ONLY LOADS OF BUCKS BUT ALSO LOTS OF TIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE EASY OR SHOULD I SAY JUST A CLICK OR TWO WITH OTHER BRANDS.
I’ve been reading all the above for the obvious reason…….. Same problems!
I can connect my S2 to the PC ok using the android connection option (sometimes, it seems very dodgy to me) then I try to sync with WMP. All looks good and it starts to sync with the phone, but after only a few songs suddenly sync stops and shows the memory bar indicator under the connected device is full. This happens on both the phone memory and the SD card. You actualy see the memery bar fill up! Then WMP then says sync finished remove device……….WTF??? Maybe some kind of conflict going on with Kies ??? Samsung really needs to sort this out fast. I have only just my phone, so there is still time to send it back!!
Guys,
Its simple in Galaxy S GT I9000
Enable USB tetherng and just connect to USB port after install samsung keys.
You PC is connected.
Enjoy.
Regards,
Najeem
Genius mate. absolute genius u are. The idiot who said follow the instructions on the user manual needs to take a step back and realise that this just might not work – hence the numerous problems users are having. Clearly there is a connection issue with this phone. I have previously connected twice to my PC but not for ages and it would not work at all this time. Previous times it just worked randomly through repeated trying – this time it was not playing ball at all. your solution got it working – thanks.
Thank you!
To add to this: Kies won’t connect to your phone if you happen to have Launcher Pro installed instead of the default (ugly) app launcher.
Samsung really have made a pile of poo out of Kies!
I had to turn off Wi-fi in order to have the USB connection recognized by the phone to my laptop. After that it mounted properly to Windows Vista and now I can transfer my music files with any file manager software.
