Back in March I started looking for a new mail user agent, commonly referred to as email client. During the last few days I had a little time at my hands and I tried Claws Mail, eM Client, Postbox and Sylpheed. Regarding Postbox I went for the 30-days trial of the full version after I’ve compared the two editions (Postbox and Postbox Express). I set up a few IMAP and POP3 accounts and then I just used each client for a short time.

Once again, I’ll stay true to Thunderbird. To be honest, I liked Postbox a lot but it’s not that much superior to Thunderbird especially if you consider the add-ons situation. What I liked best about Postbox was the way they organized the accounts. That’s where Postbox really shines. So, instead of wasting more time with other clients I just went ahead and did what I wanted to do for a few years – I finally created a nice User.js to store some helpful preferences. I thought I’d share a few of the most important settings that I found with you:

// Thunderbird 3 adds a disk cache. Activate it to cache any remote content.
// Messages and attachments are now cached for IMAP accounts as well.
user_pref("browser.cache.disk.enable", true);
// Grant 50 megabytes of storage
user_pref("browser.cache.disk.capacity", 51200);

Now, let’s move on to the IMAP settings. Here are some subscription settings:

// check every IMAP folder for new messages
// This way you don't have to subscribe to every folder
user_pref("mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new", true);
// Automatically subscribe to new folders when they are created (or renamed)
user_pref("mail.imap.auto_subscribe", true);
// Automatically unsubscribe from new folders when they are deleted
// Also, unsubscribe from old names of folders when they are renamed
user_pref("mail.imap.auto_unsubscribe", true);

Now, let’s optimize the mail fetching in chunks:

Keep in mind that Google recommends to turn off fetching messages in chunks for its GMail accounts.

// Fetch the message in chunks
user_pref("mail.imap.fetch_by_chunks", true);
// Maximum chunk size to use when fetching IMAP messages in chunks. Defaults to 10240 bytes.
user_pref("mail.imap.max_chunk_size", 40960);
// Don't fetch the message in chunks unless its at least this size. Defaults to 15360 bytes.
user_pref("mail.imap.min_chunk_size_threshold", 98304);
// Initial chunk size to use when fetching IMAP messages in chunks. Defaults to 10240 bytes.
user_pref("mail.imap.chunk_size", 65536);
// Number of bytes to adjust chunk size by when dynamically adjusting the chunk size. Defaults to 2048 bytes.
user_pref("mail.imap.chunk_add", 8192);
// If a chunk is fetched faster than this, it will increase the chunk size to improve throughput. Defaults to 2 seconds.
user_pref("mail.imap.chunk_fast", 2);
// Ideal amount of time it should take to fetch a chunk. Defaults to 4 seconds.
user_pref("mail.imap.chunk_ideal", 4);

Other IMAP settings you may want to consider:

// Download headers for new mail
user_pref("mail.imap.new_mail_get_headers", true);

// Search folder for deleted messages. If none are found the expunge is skipped
user_pref("mail.imap.check_deleted_before_expunge", true);

// Cleanup (expunge) on exit. Messages marked for deletion will be expunged.
user_pref("cleanup_inbox_on_exit", true);
// If you'd rather have them expunged when you delete them in your client uncomment the following line:
// This will also expunge messages marked for deletion after a move operation (moving a msg in a subfolder, for instance)
// user_pref("mail.imap.expunge_after_delete", true);

How to handle attachments:

// fetch attachments only when needed
user_pref("mail.imap.mime_parts_on_demand", true);
// controls how many leels of nested attachments there has to be before fetching the whole message
user_pref("mail.imap.mime_parts_on_demand_max_depth", 15);
// Always fetch the complete contents of a IMAP message unless its size is greater
// than this value (not worth optimizing whats fetched).
// Defaults to 30000 bytes.
user_pref("mail.imap.mime_parts_on_demand_threshold", 30000);

With these settings Thunderbird works very well for me. If you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to comment!

[/code]

<br />
<br />

At GamesCom 2010 Blizzard revealed how crafters will be able to create their own gear. In Diablo II, you had the assistance of the mystical Horadric Cube to create new items. In Diablo III, Blizzard introduced the Artisan, a new character who does the work for you. You just need to enlist an artisan and provide some materials and he sets out to create your new gear.

To add an Artisan to your retinue you have to help him out -- usually by doing a quest for him. After you gained his trust he will follow you on your travels. They will set up show in the nearest town and you will be able to interact with him there. There are three types of Artisans that will be available to your hero: blacksmith, mystic, and jeweller.

You can sell and repair items at the blacksmith, as well as have him create weapons and armor for you. He can also add sockets to any weapon or armor.

The mystic creates magical implements like scrolls, potions, runes and charms, and enchants items.

The jeweller is an interesting fellow: He creates gems for you and allows you to combine gems to create one of higher quality. This Artisan can also remove gems from items.

In order to increase the quality of the items you have to train the artisans so that they too can level up. Skilling up your artisans will also unlock unique recipes. For the artisans to do your bidding, you have to provide them with certain materials. These materials differ from artisan to artisan. You can get the necessary materials by salvaging items you find while playing. Every player will gain an artifact that allows you to break down items into materials so that you don’t have to go to town repeatedly just to salvage the items. The materials stack and thus only take up one square in your inventory each. Of course, higher-level items are salvaged into higher-level materials. Contrary to the Horadric Cube, the artifact so salvage items doesn’t take up any inventory space. Last but not least, Blizzard says that many rare crafting recipes and materials are only found as world drops.

If you want to take a loot at the Artisan for yourself, enjoy:

What else did we learn from Blizzard at Gamescom? Well, quite a bit. Here’s the short form because I’m lazy:

There won’t be town portals anymore and the designers are focusing on way points instead.

Blizzard isn’t exploring console ports. For now.

Hardcore players will gain fancy effects in their profiles that make them stand out in Battle.Net.

There will be a storage limitation with your stash but it will be ridiculously large.

There will be set Items in Diablo III.

Enhancing and socketing items will require gold. Actually, almost everything will require gold.

So, this week I bought the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) so that I too could revel in the Android glory. I did a litte research before buying the phone and in the end I had to make my choice between the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000). I went for the Galaxy S because of the Super AMOLED, the 8 GB storage, and the bigger screen. Up until an hour ago I liked what I had.

When I tried to connect the phone to the PC to access the SD card though, it didn’t really work. I tried changing a few settings and I even installed Samsung Kies which didn’t help either. Alright, a challenge then. I set my mind to the task and here’s how I finally managed to access the phone’s internal SD card on my PC running Windows XP. On Windows 7 everything just works so there’s no need to install or change anything at all.

Install Samsungs New PC Studio for the drivers (Alternatively, you can try to locate only the drivers somewhere else on the web).

Go to Settings – About phone – USB settings and choose Ask on connection.

Go to Settings – Applications – Development and turn on USB debugging.

Connect the phone via USB, choose Mass storage from the menu, slide the notification drawer down and select “Select to copy files to/from your computer”.

Confirm the popup by pressing “Mount”.

Now comes the important part because this didn’t work the first time.

Disconnect the phone in the notification drawer und disconnect the USB cable.

Go to Settings – Applications – Development and turn off USB debugging.

Connect the phone again as outlined above and now everything should work normally.

That’s how I got my Galaxy S working. Everything else I tried did nothing at all – and I literally searched through lots of forums. As long as there’s a solution I don’t mind. Sure, it sucks big time but at least I didn’t have to contact support and wait days or weeks for a solution.

A few days ago I had to check out lots of PDFs and I never liked the Adobe Reader that much. I also have a dislike for the Foxit Reader and while the Nitro PDF Reader has its uses it’s not exactly small, it’s still beta, and if you don’t like the ribbon user inferface you won’t be happy with it. I discarded Sumatra PDF because of it’s very, very minimalistic user interface and Cool PDF Reader because I got a few error messages with different PDFs.

Perfect PDF Reader 6 was too big as was the excellent PDF-XChange Viewer. By now I was ready to go with the PDF-XChange Viewer despite its size but then I stumbled over a PDF reader called STDU Viewer. It’s small, it’s blazingly fast, it opened every PDF I threw at it, and it features tabs. Absolutely fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for! I would recommend this viewer to everbody looking for a small but efficient PDF reader.

Slated for release in January 2011 the film stars Seth Rogen as the title character and Jay Chou as his manservant Kato. While I like Rogen he wouldn’t have been my first choice for this movie so I guess this should make it interesting.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t look very remarkable. I had to laugh a bit though, so let’s hope for the best. I’m confident Rogen will get the part of Britt Reid right but I’m not so sure about the other part. Well, we’ll have to wait until the movie is released, but until then, enjoy the trailer:

During E3 Sony announced that it will launch a new premium subscription service called PlayStation Plus on June 29th. The PlayStation Network as we know it will still be free to join and all the current features will remain free. PlayStation Plus expands on the service already in place and offers loads of content to subscribers. Starting on June 29th Sony will offer a one year or 90-day membership from PlayStation Store.

As an incentive they throw in a full copy of LittleBigPlanet if you sign up for a one year membership between June 29th and August 3rd. The one year subscription will be available for €49.99 while three months will cost you €14.99. What do we get for our money?

Sony says that members will get their hands on at least four games a month at no extra charge. That sounds good but the four games will be comprised of one PSN game, two minis and one PS one classics. Subscribers also get premium avatars and dynamic themes each month as well as discounts on loads of PlayStation Store content. The discounts will change each month as well.

The premium feature also allows for full game trials. Members can download a full copy of a game and play it for a certain amount of time as if they owned it. The timeframe depends on the game but you should have approximately one hour to check out the game. If you decide to buy the game, your progress and trophies will all be unlocked so there’s no need to start again.

The most useful perk, however, seems to be what Sony calls automatic download. Subscribers can set their PS3 to automatically receive game and firmware updates, and download game demos. All you have to do is to set the time when you want to receive them and your PS3 will wake up and download everything. That sounds really useful to me.

Check out PlayStation Plus and see for yourself. You need at least version 3.40 of the PS3 system software to make it work. I think that’s just what I need. Perhaps updates will get a bit faster then.

The 13th major release includes a new default theme called Twenty Ten, introduces new APIs, and merges MU and WordPress. Even better, the developers managed to create a lighter interface and stuff in 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements. What I like most so far is the new bulk update for plugins. A comprehensive list of the improvements is available on 3.0′s Codex page. Go get it from the official site.

Well, well, well. First they fuck up the original movie so that you can’t possibly watch it in the cinema and now they’re rushing production for the sequel. Of course, Clash of the Titans earned nearly $490 million world-wide thus making a sequel economically sensible, irresistible even. If you haven’t seen Clash of the Titans already wait for a better cut on Blu-ray or DVD. Want to know why the movie sucks? Head over to chud.com and be enlightened!

As far as the sequel is concerned, it looks like the powers that be are focused on getting the script ready for filming in early 2011. At least they want to shoot the film in 3D instead of trying a post conversion again. Blu-ray + DVD + digital Copy combo of Clash of the Titans will be out on July 27th. According to ComingSoon.net a sneak preview of The Green Lantern will be included. As if that would help the movie …

A few days ago, the E3 trailer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution made it into the web. The third installment actually is a prequel to the original Deus Ex published in the year 2000. In March the first trailer was shown to the public. The E3 trailer expands on the former and drops a few hints of the possible plot. Before I start rambling, do yourself a favor and enjoy the trailer:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FRWYRqaGFE

Deus Ex took place in 2052, Deux Ex: Human Revolution takes you into the year 2027. Since Human Revolution is a prequel the augmentations are mechanical rather than featuring nanotech like the first two games did. The augmentations will be divided into four types: Combat, Social, Stealth, Technology. Thankfully, the developers also got rid of the unified ammunition introduced with Deus Ex: Invisible War. The game deals with the ethics of transhumanism and meta-humans. The greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus in the main character’s dreams serves as an allegory to this theme. As was the case in previous titles conspiracy theories and powerful corporations are very prominent.

The main character, Adam Jensen, is a security chief with a company that specializes in biomechanical augmentations. Once he witnesses an attack on his company the conspiracy -- and the game -- begins. Jensen needs to find out who just killed all the scientists and why they did it. You can surely guess the rest: questions lead to other questions and soon Jensen has to save the cheerleader world.

There’s only one thing really bugging me. Once again, the game will hit different platforms (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). I seriously hope it won’t suffer the same fate as Invisible War did. As a consequence of console-oriented development the levels were smaller and the game was lacking detail. There’s nothing else to do but wait and hope. The game currently has a tentative release date of March 2011.

With the debut of a short Mortal Kombat film titled Rebirth speculation has run rampant on the internet yesterday. The nearly eight-minute clip featured a very interesting and dark and gritty take on the fighting franchise. The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen and features a cast that includes Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion), Lateef Crowder (Baraka), Mat Mullins (Johnny Cage), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade) and Michael jai White (Jax). According to Jeri Ryan’s twittering Rebirth isn’t a live-action trailer for the next Mortal Kombat game and it’s not a trailer for a new MK movie. Looks like an independent production to sell Warner Brothers Tancharoen’s reimagining of the franchise.

So, there’s no guarantee that there will be a reimagining or if there is that the same actors will play the characters in a feature film version. Despite all that, the ‘teaser’ looks like a huge success online. Lots of talk here and there and I have to admit, I like Tancharoen’s vision more than the first two films and I definitely like it more than that sorry excuse for a series titled Mortal Kombat: Conquest. Anyway, enjoy the trailer:
